Comparison of Path-Resolved Optical Turbulence Measurements Using Two MZA DELTAs
Optical turbulence can degrade the quality of a laser beam as it propagates, and hence impact the performance of a directed energy weapon. Thus, it is important to accurately estimate turbulence levels, characterized by the refractive index structure constant C¬n2, at points along a laser beam path. The Delayed Tilt Anisoplanatism (DELTA) turbulence profiler uses a differential tilt technique to obtain path-resolved estimates of C¬n2. This method has been validated in various experimental studies. However, little is known about how the turbulence profile of two DELTAs would compare while imaging the same optical path but in opposite directions. An experiment was set up at the NIWC littoral range using two DELTAs oriented in an opposing configuration to compare path-resolved turbulence estimates. Data was collected over a period of a month. Results will be presented and discussed.
