A Study of Adaptive Optics Configurations for Various High Energy Laser Weapon System Missions
The High Energy Laser Weapon Systems (HELWS) beam control industry has yet to deploy adaptive optics (AO) systems for the compensation of atmospheric and aero-optical effects. Although significant advancements have been made in AO system component development, there is still no consensus on how, and in what form, to get such systems fielded. The typical reasons for omitting AO from HELWS are increased cost and complexity, uncertainty in how well the AO systems will work, and a general lack of understanding of illuminator requirements. This presentation provides an overview of AO concepts and designs as applied to tactical HELWS missions and the costs and benefits of each.
