Atmospheric Characterization Diagnostics System: Optical Turbulence Model Development and Evaluation

This presentation will provide an overview of the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) based forecasting of three-dimensional fields of refractive index structure function. Forecasting algorithms are a part of the Atmospheric Characterization Diagnostics System (ACDS) capable of determining three-dimensional optical propagation performance predictions for directed energy systems. The methodology utilized will incorporate the assimilation of satellite and in situ observations to account for spatial variability of surface energy inputs into the atmosphere. A Persistent Data Collection Site (PDCS) has been established in North Alabama to evaluate forecasting methodologies. This talk will present retrievals of vertical profiles of atmospheric optical turbulence profiles from integrated analysis of Sound Detection and Ranging with Radar Acoustic Sounding System, Wind Profiling Radar, Microwave Profiling Radiometer, and Radiosondes at the Persistent Data Collection Site (PDCS) located in North Alabama. Intercomparison of these retrievals to NWP simulated optical turbulence over the PDCS test site will also be presented.
